I Try To MAGIC a Plant!!!
“I Try To MAGIC a Plant!!!” is a 2D animated short film created by me with music by Cadence Hira. This short film was made as my thesis for my Digital Media & Design degree.
The short would later be entered and accepted into the 2021 Trinity Film Festival, ranking in the top 3 for the Audience Choice award.
In “I Try To MAGIC a Plant”, we watch a video that was uploaded on a fictional Youtube-adjacent website. The main character, a candy-themed witch named Red Velvet, is attempting to show her audience how to use magic to make a flower grow. She has trouble doing so with many incorrect spells progressively destroying her kitchen. Eventually through skipping through the video and watching a couple ads, Red Velvet puts in the work to finally grow a healthy, beautiful flower.
When making the short, I wanted to push the message that you can’t make progress or succeed unless you keep working to achieve those goals; and while making mistakes and even failing at moments can be disheartening, it’d be worse to quit entirely. The short also has a second theme of embracing growth and humility, with the main character uploading her video online for all to see, mistakes and bloopers included.
